This piece was inspired by another of mine. Originally it was smaller and captured a day at Manly beach. It was much quicker and looser than I usually do. But I loved the composition, three figures each lost in thought but clearly belonging with each other. I adored painting it so much I decided to go bigger and spend a bit more time on it. As a result, the feels is quite different I think. It’s got more depth and more softness. There is still a looseness in the reflections on the sand, but overall it’s more delicate and the figures are more refined. I love painting people who are looking away. It builds intrigue and I find myself fascinated thinking about what they can see that I can’t. There’s a wildness in the sea, the spray and the foam. You can almost hear this painting. Yet it is so calm.
