The Fairy Bowers Pool in Manly is a salt water ocean pool sitting right up against the sea. It makes for a stunning contrast between the shallower waters of the pool and the dark wild ocean beyond. The composition of this piece felt quite theatrical to me as I painted it. The dark sea as a background means the panel of sunbathing characters is almost spotlit. Although the front figures (mother holding baby aloft) catch your eye from afar, it is this lineup of intriguing subjects sitting in a row that hold the attention and keep the eye engaged over time.
